Abstract

This article proposes a comparative reading between Canigó, written by Jacint Verdaguer, and Canto jo i la muntanya balla, written by Irene Solà, from an ecofeminist perspective, as we place the role of nature and its relationship with humanity at the centre of the dialogue between these two works. Moreover, this approach allows us to become aware of the climate emergency that we are currently facing and to rethink our relationship with historically oppressed living beings—women and non-humans living beings—by patriarchy, because of its simultaneous anthropocentric and androcentric worldview, legitimised through culture. To this end, we have divided our research into three parts. First, by means of the study of the critical reception of Canto jo i la muntanya balla, we will identify and establish, according to the Gerard Genette’s system, the type of transtextuality between Canigó and Solà’s novel. Second, through a close reading of both books, we will examine the similarities between the anthropomorphic characters—the humans, namely Oliba, Gentil and Hilari, and the dones d’aigua (water women)—and their relationship with art and its environment. Finally, we will focus on the mechanisms that convey an ecodependence message through three non-human voices—the voices of the clouds and the Pirineus in Solà’s book, and the voice of the Canigó in Verdaguer’s poem—and on the linguistic traits employed by the authors to construct these characters. These voices conclude that, due to the short life span of human beings and in contrast to the immovable and eternal circle of life, the last thing that will endure through the centuries would be the nature itself. Consequently, it is the only legacy that we can bequeath to future generations.
