Abstract

One of the methodological trends that have gained the most relevance in recent times is the multimodal analysis of artistic texts. This approach incorporates ideas from various theoretical proposals related to the semiological and pragmatic scope of the constituent parts, as well as the aesthetic value of the work or corpus under analysis. Taking Carles Santos’ stage production as a case study, the interweaving of texts with music, sets, lighting and other significant elements becomes immediately apparent. His body of work is an excellent reference point for developing tools that allow us to describe the subtleties and nuances of stage performance in a rigorous manner. This paper focuses specifically on the period during which Mariaelena Roqué was responsible for costume design and artistic direction at the Carles Santos Company. It considers the relevance of the costumes in the context of the resulting shows and how they relate to the productions’ textual, meaningful and narrative dimensions. We will attempt to establish a relationship between character construction, plot evolution and set design, as manifested in Roqué’s designs amid the dialogue between the material and the symbolic.
